Notes: Late at night, I would sit in Paul Hall, staring at the empty stage where a great organ
-essentially a machine- dominates the space. I imagined the space resonating and vibrating with the
sound of its thousands of pipes. I imagined a solo violin -perhaps the least mechanical, the most
sensitive of instruments- singing an endless melody above it. Finally, four clarinets -human pipes-
bridged the vast space between these two worlds.
When performing this piece, let time dissolve. Erase any sense of pulse. Paint a dream.
